3 Things That Will Indicate Moisture and What To Do

Siding will show its age differently depending on the type of material it is made from and how that material has been maintained. However, in the Pacific Northwest it is especially appropriate to know how to watch for moisture infiltration.

Here at Perdue Builders, checking for moisture damage and rot are standard protocol.

Sometimes we are able to press on the siding to feel for a cushion-feel, which indicates moisture living in the siding itself. Other times, we don’t know there is rot until we remove the siding.

Here are a few things to look out for:

  1. Peeling paint or wallpaper that is pulling away from a wall inside of a home can be symptomatic of faulty siding. Failed siding allows moisture to seep its way underneath the siding where it can percolate through wallboard and eventually cause significant damage to the interior walls of a home. It can become a breeding ground for bacteria and mold.

  2. Water stains or water runoff that starts and stops suddenly will signal that water may be entering the siding and affecting the interior of the home. Water stains show up as discoloration or streaking on the siding.

  3. Nail heads that are exposed, rusty, or missing? If your nails have popped out or if your siding is swelling and the nails are recessed, this means your siding has experienced some sort of movement or has been expanding and contracting. Rusty nails can signify moisture damage over time.

Perdue Builders can evaluate your siding and give you a no-obligation bid.
