Exterior Trim Options Explained

There is a lot of talk about siding material options, but less dialogue around exterior trim options. Trim plays a big role in your home’s exterior since it generally frames windows, doors, house corners and more. The “right” trim can depend on several factors, such as climate, cost, aesthetics, and the upkeep required.

Some trim options are not recommended or offered in all regions, so it is important to know what you have to choose from. Perdue Builders & Supply is proud to be a resource to you.

Here are a few of the trim materials to choose from:

  1. Fiber cement trim—James Hardie:

Pros: Durable, affordable, and rot, insect & fire resistant. There are also pre-painted options.

Cons: Hardie fiber cement is currently not being manufactured in the pacific northwest.

  2. Wood trim (cedar)— Absolute Trim:

Pros: Natural product that is insect and rot resistant. Cedar is available in many width and length options. It can be milled to any shape and is readily available.

    Cons: More expensive.

  3. PVC Trim— Azek:

Pros: This product is durable, paintable, and water, insect & rot resistant. It comes in longer lengths (16’) so there are fewer seams. PVC cuts like wood and can be milled to special shapes. It is available in many different styles including rams crown, pre-built corners and skirt boards. Available with integrated drip edges and the option for a wood grain or smooth finish.

Cons: More expensive and it does not come pre painted.

  4. Boral Trim—TruExterior:

Pros: Durable, paintable, and light weight. It is water, insect, and rot resistant. Real wood grain or smooth side on each piece. Longer lengths (16’) offer less seams. Cuts like wood and can be milled to any shape.

Cons: More expensive and it does not come pre painted.

Just like anything else, there are many more options beyond these mentioned in order to achieve your trim goals. Perdue Builders is here to help you find your ideal fit
