Choosing The Perfect Exterior House Color

Exterior paint and pre-painted siding are both tough to choose colors for. Perdue Builders knows that this aesthetic decision is important, and we are here to help.

If you’ve ever painted something, you may have noticed that sometimes the color shows up differently than the color swatch at the paint store. For the exterior of your house, things like trees and shade, lack of shade, or even the weather all can affect the siding color. For interior paint colors, decoration and furniture can bring out different hues than you expected.

There is no guarantee a color will appear as you think it will, or as the samples and swatches do. You should make sure that the color you choose is just as you hope it to be!

Here, Perdue Builders will walk you through a few ideas of how to pick the best color for your home’s exterior:

  1. Paint a few small sample areas on 2-3 sides of your house. Some areas of the house get more light than others, so you’ll want to see the color in shadier areas and areas that the sun hits it directly. Check these sample areas throughout the day and week — you might notice the color looks different as the sun sets or when it rains.

  2. If your contractor can provide some addresses where they’ve done work, go look at houses with the same (or similar) color/s as what you are considering. A sample swatch might be different than an entire house, so make sure you like it!

  3. Mock-ups are a great way to see your house in the color options you are considering. The downside to this is that a computer screen isn’t always going to represent all of the color’s hues, so you’ll probably want to pair this with ideas 1 and/or 2.

Once you’ve narrowed your color search down to a select few, you can always Google search the colors. Homeowners who have gone before you may have made blog posts, reviews or given other sorts of feedback online. This is a great way to compare colors, too, i.e. “Color X appears warmer in my dark room” or “Color Y has blue hues to it on cloudy days”.

Last but not least, it never hurts to ask your contractor! We don’t claim to be color experts, but we work with colors a lot and will weigh in if you need us too.
